  • what if something happened to you?

we went to the attorney last year and paid big bucks to get our wills, power of attorneys, medical power of attorneys, etc.. prepared... our sons could step in right now and take over.... we wanted to make sure our family was taken care of.. we also have sufficent life insurance and cd's in place
    for them...
my son has recently learned a high school friend simply died in his sleep...
his good friend duffy has had 2 lung transplants and is paralyzed..... so, he is pretty concerned now with enjoying life... he goes to see duffy twice a week and takes him on an outing....
his other friend brent just recently found out his grandma did not leave him the apts in cleveland he has been taking care of and living in one of them.. his dad got them instead.... i think it is better to have everything in place.

Wow that is a lot of misfortune there in your last post. I did my own power of attorney, medical proxy, and medical power of attorney. I had a friend who is a lawyer write up our will so I got that free as well.

I have life insurance up to age 64. After that I wil have the money for my cremation all together and the wife and daughter will inherit what I put together.

That is the best I can do. It sure is more than I ever had!

Well, I have everything set up so that my sister gets everything...she's my beneficiary for the life insurance and all the bank accounts...1. because DD cannot be a beneficiary until she's 18 and 2. because that way I know the $$ will be used for DD!

This has always been a very important topic for us, but, has become even more so in the last year, with my sister's illness...unfortunately, we got some very ugly news yesterday...she's going for a second opinion today

Amen to getting everything together! Nothing worse than leaving your family in a lurch should something happen to you. We created a pretty complex trust, so needed a lawyer.
In addition to the usual, we have passwords, account info, etc. at a secure online storage site so that we (or those to whom we have given access) could get to what they needed from anywhere. I'm also sending a CD with relevant stuff to an out of state family member; he already has a copy of our Trust, Will, etc.
Lastly, we're "going to" get our nearly grown daughters to be cosigners for our safe deposit box. I've heard that it's a nightmare (or at least very slow) to get into a safe deposit box otherwise.

Our attorney was right about wills, trusts, power of attorney, bank accounts, health proxies, etc., are not carved in stone once you do them as changes in lifestyle call for a revision. My husband retires June 1, 2006 after 36 years and 8 months with the USPS. He received his retirement bundle in the mail and now that the PS will not be paying 100% of our medical and insurance needs, we are redoing these forms. We selected out of our three sons the one who will look after the interest of the other two with fairness.

In that case, why not leave it to your favorite charities? I'm doing that, and i do have family that's also named in my will, but the charities will get at least one-quarter.

Re: what if something happened to you?

I plan too do that. I love animals and the university has a great teaching hospital. (vet) They have a fund for people whose animals need surgery, but they can't afford it. They treated our doberman for 3 months there, and i saw many people get help for their pets that could not pay.
I have an adopted daughter that chose a lifestyle I cannot agree to. She only called me when she wanted money. After many cars, a house and about $50,000 in cash, i said no more. She has not called me since. She does have some children, but i have never met the boys. The girls live with relatives and they are in our will.
I hope to be able to help out some deserving people with whatever money we have.

Ima, you certainly don't have to explain something as heartbreaking like that to anyone, let alone us. I know the pain you feel and wherever or whomever you choose to leave your money is YOUR decision. From your posts you are a compassionate person and I truly believe you did all you could to make your adopted daughter happy. With some people it is greed and the " It's all about me" syndrome.

Re: what if something happened to you?

I have life insurance with my 2 oldest as beneficieries. I have some investments with my kids names as benefieceries. And for my house & cars I dont have anyone named I think dh would get those since we are married wouldnt they automatically go to him? I believe my oldest would go live with her dad if I died & my 2 younger ones here with my husband thier dad if I died. Hopefully soon I will get it more straight than it is right now!!
