And just to be clear, I'm not talking about people on the same level as me - fellow professionals. I'm talking about our support staff - medical assistants and radiology techs. It would be like an executive giving something to his secretary/admin. assistant. I give everybody (except the manager) the same amount so it's all fair and equal.
i have in the past tried to give items to support people in my life work and outside of work. some were great successes but too many were not.

I have unfortunately ran into too many people whom feel they need to give me a list or somehow mention their personal preferences or dietary resources.
So I veered away from food/ candy etc , then tried gift cards to coffee shops etc and got there is not one of these close to me etc......
Way to many people simply do not know how to graciously accept a gift and it is the thought that counts.
I have received items i would never use and i passed along to some one else but never made the giver feel obligated to DO BETTER or unappreciated.

Oh, totally different situation. These are all people I work with daily and know pretty well. Last year, I gave Dunkin Donuts cards. There is a DD next to our office and everybody goes there regularly. This year, I'm giving cards to a BBQ place that opened down the street this summer. Everybody has been there and loved it. And it's not a gift exchange or a secret Santa or anything like that where they would be asking for what they wanted. It's a totally unsolicited gift from me.

it was an unsolicited gift from me i bought a fruit basket for group of ladies and had one person go on and on about she has an allergy.
It was not as if i planned to kill her it was a simple gesture.
I had zero knowledge of an allergy or preferences etc. perhaps I have just worked with jerks that were never taught manners.
The gift cards i gave were from places located around our work too .......but some people seemed put out to walk across a parking lot or stop on their way to or from work.

          Sounds like some ungrateful folks.

In my case, I knew for sure that everyone I was gifting frequented the places I was giving them cards for, so I knew nobody would be disappointed.

I think that to give present it is about your attention to their work. But if you don't want to do this, it's okay. It's better when you give gifts with sincerity than with some obligation. For your employees it shouldn’t be an expensive gift. I like holidays and the gifts, and so, I always buy something to give. More often I look for some gift baskets which are of different forms and contain tea, fruits, chocolates or flowers. I find out that gift baskets like everyone and so, I don’t spend more time for choosing gift. The advantages of this gift are also that you can order all this gift basket online.

In our company for each employees birthday our company present some gift! And also, each department offers a grant from the department. Last time we gave for our Team Lead the face mesh socks, it was funny)
