Father of the index fund, John Bogle, has died

John Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group and creator of the first index fund, has died at the age of 89.

Vanguard is the world's largest investment firm and index funds are a mainstay of investing for millions of people including many users of this site, myself included.

I had the honor of meeting him last October at the Boglehead conference. I was amazed by his intellect and humor as well as his generousity with his time. He had been ill — just checked out of the hospital the day before the conference, but still came to give his speech.

He has given the common person a powerful, effective low cost way to invest in the stock market.

The world has lost a true hero.
