  • Do you have solar power?

I'm considering getting solar power from my house. Does anyone have solar power and if so, do you rent or own the panels. How does it work and are you saving as much money as you expected?

I don't, but a lot of people in my area are putting them up. I know some are buying them outright and others are leasing them. It's something I should find out more about.

It's a good way to save, but it's hard to maintain and fixing it once it broke down will really cost you a lot. I tried to buy one before, but I decided to stay away with it because some of my friends really don't recommend it also.

I have had a solar panel system on my house for 5 years now... with the subsidies at the time we should hit our break even point after 12 years, so seven more years to go.

I think they are worth the money, but be smart about the inverters because thats where you can get burned. String inverters are old school, they are relatively cheap but only last 12-15 years and limit your panel configurations. I highly recommend you go with a reputable brand of micro-inverter... pretty much the only choice is Enphase. Enphase has a 25 year warranty on their inverters, vs 10 years on a string inverter.

Most decent panels will have a 25 year warranty. We have a 4.96kW system, all Kyocera panels. No issues yet.

So far, I only have my solar can heater.. My dream would be to go off grid total solar but right now I don't have the funds for it. It seems to me you kinda have to go big or don't go, I wish there was a way to start small and work up over time but with the battery storage, meter hook up,(if you put back to the grid), inverters, wiring and panels its a bit much for me at this time..

No, this is a grid tied system.
