I've been reading up on this and it seems there is a lot of contradictory information out there about which is best for both my wallet and the environment? I would love to hear your thoughts on which is the better choice financially taking in time and effort as well.

Cloth diapers vs disposable diapers?

It's a no brainer that cloth diapers are better for the environment. Do you need tens of thousands of chemical laden diaper to be manufactured and disposed of or do you just need 20 pieces of cloth?
We personally had the best of both worlds. We hired a cloth diaper service. They delivered and cleaned all the diapers. People would always act like we were total martyrs but there was nothing to it. Since we never had any midnight diaper runs and just set out the dirty diapers to be magically replaced, I'd argue the diaper service was easier than using disposables. OF course, we used the disposables when out and about more (or for long trips) but just not most of the time.
Cost-wise, the disposables would have been cheaper than a service. If you wash yourself, the cloth diapers will be cheaper than disposables. (Our decision was environmentally driven, not cost driven).
Bonus: They say kids potty train way earlier in cloth and this was true for my kids. If you can get your kids out of diapers a year or two or three earlier it saves a LOT in the long run!

I cloth diapered my daughter- mainly for environmental reasons. We washed the dipes ourselves and I bought the high end ones (no pins, they snap or velcro on just like a disposable). They were not cheap but we got our money's worth for sure. I didn't think it was hard to do at all (2-3 more loads of laundry a week -big deal).
I also got a diaper sprayer attachment for my toilet.
