First congrats! We are expecting our 3rd next summer. We got rid of everything so this is a good thread to read.

Crib, mattress, mattress pad, 2-3 sets of sheets, stroller, diapers, wipes, rear-facing car seat, gentle shampoo or body wash...

Rash ointment is a must! We use Butt Paste.

Hint: Keep an extra diaper bag or bag with diapers/wipes /extra clothes in the car.

a bassinet or Moses basket makes a good looking shower gift but they grow out of those so fast you really don't need one, maybe borrow a bassinet if you can for the convenience of having the baby in the room with you.

If your wife is breastfeeding and working, a very good breast pump is a must, I suggest the Medela Pump In Style. You can get the machine used and buy all new tubing and pumping equipment. A good pump for a working mom can make all the difference for breast feeding success.

A Boppy pillow is a useful item first for breast feeding and then later when the baby is able to be propped up or is learning to sit up.

When the baby becomes a toddler, pick up the big Little Tykes products at garage sales. They clean up great with brillo and comet, you'll save a ton. I bought most of my kids clothes at garage sales until about age 5 when the clothes were more worn out and not worth it.
