They are very cost efficient, but my main concern is water & electricity.

I am bringing this thread back to life rather than start a new one.

We are moving closer in to the city in the Spring. We have had homes with apartments over the garage or in the basement in mind because we have a son with some special needs. We think he will eventually be able to live on his own, but for now, we forsee him living near us and relying on us for a while.

But now I have been researching tiny houses. Our city allows them! The rules are that the tiny house cannot be larger than half of the square footage of your main house, and cannot be larger than 800 square feet. You can even connect them to your own sewer/water, electric from your main house.

One guy in town has 3 of them in his backyard and rents them out!

The nice thing about them IMO is that you can resell them for close to what you paid for them when you are finished and then you don't have space unused that you paid extra for.

We may have to purchase one, but I think it would be awesome for my husband (who knows how to build) and my son to build one together.

I am researching them now just for fun. In our city, the loft areas that are not a full 8' ceiling don't count towards the square footage of the tiny house, although that probably won't matter anyway, I don't see it getting to 800 sq. ft. even with the loft area. I am looking mostly at 250-300 not including the loft/sleeping area.

I think it would be perfect for a single or young married person. Kids added in would be difficult I think.

Built this tiny home right next to her parents house for my girl in Thailand, for her son to stay when she comes here to live and for us to stay in when we go back for visits. It was 16k American money to build, only a bedroom, bathroom and small kitchen, maybe 400 square feet. Could have built a plain Jane little house for around 10-12k but she wanted a nice looking house for status symbol in her small village
retired in 2009 at the age of 39 with less than 300K total net worth

Nice. Did you build it yourself or did you have it built?

Had it built, her father's friend was the contractor

I see. Yeah, that would not be $16K here.

Nice place 97guns! I would really like to go small, but it's also intimidating. I want to still be comfortable. Saw this yurt a few days ago and this would be a dream, haha!
