  • Resurrected my washing machine

I have just saved about $700. DW called from the basement that there was something wrong with the washing machine, went down and it was sitting, full of water and rattling like something was stuck. (it was a front loading HE machine that is ~8 years old.) She went upstairs saying it was out of warranty, not worth calling a repair-man, and really didn't owe us anything and started researching new machines. I jumped on Youtube and did my own research, found out we had a "suds lock" from a towel that had been used to clean up one of the kids liquid soap spills, putting too much soap in the system and cavitating the pump, preventing it from draining and starting the spin cycle. Youtube videos also showed me how to put the machine in diagnostic mode and auto start the spin cycle. After a few rinses to clear the soap it is back to running as usual. If you need a DIY fix it is the first thing I try.. JM $.02 Have a great day.

Good on you! So many are unwilling to even try to diagnose the problem. You Tube is such a wonderful resource, it has real people demonstrating what needs to be done, what tools are needed and even identifies the correct names for parts so that you're not at the plumbing supply house mumbling about thing-a-ma-jings. We've found it helpful to take photos on the phone to help with explanation.

I hope you give yourself a reward. You've likely saved yourself $ 1,000. for a replacement W/D that's not yet needed. Would DW be willing to make home made HE detergent? It's cheap, does an excellent job of cleaning dirty clothes and helps with the suds issue. All the various recipes are on ..You Tube.

Good for you!! I had a similar thing happen - my washer (top-loader - booo) stopped spinning/agitating; it was an el-cheapo that we bought when we were living in Raleigh. The bldg mngmnt let us have a free year of washer/dryer in the unit then wanted to charge us $20 each per month to keep them. We bought a cheap set and kept them for about 15 years. Anyway, I did a little research and figured out it was just a rubber clutch-like thingy that I was able to order and install myself for about $10.00 which was mostly shipping.

I grunted, scratched my armpits like a proud primate.
