  • Money New Year's Resolutions?

What money New Year's resolutions do you plan to make for 2015?

My big one is to make 2015 the year I become debt free (excluding mortgage). It's one of the reasons I decided to stop lurking and to participate.

Welcome to SA, Terrific idea to reduce debt and hope to cheer your every success. What's the plan? Do you use mint.com or one of the programs that track your money so that you can see what happens to your money? Is it your plan to start by allocating your final 2014 pay and any bonus to payments due in January? Do you like the 'snowball,' method, making required payments to keep accounts up-to-date plus an additional sum to the smallest debt balance to try to clear it as quickly as possible. Are there any changes you would be willing to make short term, to free up $$ to rid yourself of debt?

I do use mint and I have been using the snowball method (highest interest first). I won't be starting from step one...this has actually been a several year process, but it looks like 2015, with a bit of work, will be when I can get debt free. If all things stay as they currently are, the payoff should be in early 2016, but I'm determined to find ways to speed up the process this year to shave a few months off.

        Welcome!

        You can do it!

Can you get a 2nd part-time job on the side? Or sell some stuff on craigsist or have a garage sale?

By the way, the debt snowball is paying off the debt with the lowest balance first. The debt avalanche is paying off the debt with the highest interest first.

My resolution is to create a side income of at least $500 a month by the end of 2015. I hope that 100% of this will go into investing long term.
