  • Vancouver, Canada - General information about organic food

    Hi there,

I just moved to Vancouver, Canada and i'd like to know the cheapest options to shop for healthy organic food. I've been told the main options are CSA (community supported agriculture) where they pay to join to support farmers and in turn get a box of fresh vegetables every week. Another option is the organic retail shops (maybe a bit pricey but I live in Coquitlam (suburb) so maybe there is a shop nearby? I don't know. Also there are farmers markets however many shut down passed October. Unless i can find a winter market i may need to find other sources. An idea that really appeals to me is driving around the fraser valley looking for road signs (i.e fresh eggs, vegetables) and buying direct from the residents (backyard chickens, etc..). However i don't know how common this is near Vancouver. In Australia, it was based on the honour system, boxes of eggs and a suggested donation box. What do you think?

I'm not sure if anyone here is from that area, but if you go to citydata.com, they have message boards for various cities. They might be able to help! Or maybe if there's a facebook page for your town? Good luck!

http://www.makebakegrow.com/blog-2/ Try Coquitlam Farmer's Market Society.

        Try Tourist office http://www.coquitlam.ca/business-tou...-interest.aspx

        Try Newcomer Services http://www.coquitlam.ca/business-tou...-interest.aspx

        Try City Hall information line

Your very best source of information are neighbours or colleagues. If you haven't yet gotten to know new people, it really helps to become a volunteer in whatever your point of interest. The organization is thrilled to have you and you will work with folks with similar interests. If you've never been involved in politics, you'll quickly become an 'insider' when you choose a candidate to support in whatever level has an election campaign going. It's a hoot!

What are your interests? There are so many organizations who need volunteers they treat them like gold. If you drive, check Meals on Wheels, if you like animals, volunteer as a walker or helper with SPCA, if you favour a specific religion, volunteer to help in their office or fulfill a need, there are organizations for nearly every medical condition named, the hospitals use volunteers to get magazines and books to patients, your specific community's board are always seeing volunteers to help organize events. Every sport organization and every senior's group use volunteers in endless capacities...the choice is yours.
