we've had streaming about a year. I guess I am a little picky about what I like (hate gory movies, like independent and documentaries but not too off the wall stuff)
I don't mean to badmouth a company. streaming is cheap, but I haven't been able to find anything to watch and I am a very occasional late night watcher.

I watched every documentary that interested me. I enjoyed quite a few but their stuff marked as new is not very new.

I have one child who is five but he's limited to an hour a day and I don't let him watch stuff for older kids, just innocent stuff which we did find a few shows but we blow thru them fast.

At five there should be lot's of content for your kid on Netflix. Our son at 2 likes watching an occasional Curious George.

Cid the Science Kid, Veggie Tales, Sesame Street, and Super Why are also pretty good. Have you tried those?

Perhaps you should consider getting the Netflix dvd rental then. Or perhaps Amazon Prime or Hulu?

Check out my post on accessing Netflix through US or Canada or Britain or any of the other 50 Countries that Netflix is established. Each country has its own menu. If you login from Canada you'll have different options than Britain. If you login from Jamaica you'll actually see a lot newer movies than you would from US.

We use Netflix streaming A LOT, especially my daughter (who is 18 - not 5). I use it to watch stuff when I'm on the treadmill. I'm currently on season 3 of Breaking Bad. So we definitely make use of it but I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone.

          * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
          * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
          * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Lot's of good content on Netflix regarding TV shows. Best of all? No commercials.

How are you badmouthing a company? Just because your personal preference ins't what Netflix offers has no bearing ton the company. If everyone felt the way you do, Netflix wouldn't exist.

If you don't like it, get rid of it. Not a huge deal.

I typically watch all the old sitcoms I grew up with over and over, and get my use out of it I "borrow" the login too from a friend, but I wouldn't mind paying up the $8/month. We have no cable and I don't miss it at all. Plenty via Netflix and everything else is online.

we are grandfathered into a $7.99 a month plan. I think it costs 9.99 now. I suppose it doesn't take many movies to use the 7.99 worth. Maybe I should try a show. giving it a couple months.
The streaming is convenient esp as a parent bc I never know when/if I have free time.

The public library is something I occasionally use to request a movie as it is free here.

You can always drop it for a few months and pick it back up when there are more things that you want to watch. Thankfully it isn't like the cable company where they rope you into a contract.

The other thing I love about streaming is I can do it anywhere, on any device. Sometimes I watch at home on the TV. Sometimes on my desktop. Sometimes on the treadmill on my phone or on my wife's iPad. Sometimes at work on my laptop. Sometimes in a hotel on my laptop when we're traveling (and I can use an HDMI cable to plug into the hotel TV and watch on that).

So I can start a show/movie at home one night, continue it at work on my lunch break the next day, and finish it when I'm on the treadmill that night.

I support Netflix, but don't have the subscription lately. Just haven't used a whole lot. Might pick it up later, or not.

Netflix has license agreements with the television studios, and they are big $$$ negotiations. As more and more people turn to streaming video, the costs of those contracts has skyrocketed. That is part of the reason that Netflix is coming out with their own content (house of cards, lilyhammer, orange is the new black), so they have some control over their content costs.

Don't confuse downloading for free with stealing.

                              Completely agree with Autoxer above.

There is quite a bit of difference between Netflix and torrents; not least of which is the matter of legality. However, there is also a difference in terms of technical quality.

For example, torrents may be dicey depending on how many are seeding out there, whereas it is Netflix's commercial and legal obligation to provide decent seeding.

Plus, torrents are actually more like downloads whereas Netflix is pure-streaming only.

That said, the main reason Netflix had to resort to creating original programming is largely because major media companies that own the rights to the content want to promote their own services (Hulu Plus and HBO Go). Netflix has suffered for years, actually, under limiting terms (such as getting older seasons of shows or just getting their content delayed for a year), but now they are facing out-right denial of shows entirely.

Netflix, in my opinion, is truly a white knight in shining armor in the world of digital programming. Despite media company pressure to add commercials into their service, Netflix has steadfastly refused even though that would have also padded their coffers and help make nice with their content rivals. However, they refused this, believing that customers are already paying and they wanted to provide a seemless experience (including entire seasons of episodes at a time). All in the name of serving the end user.

That is why I support them. That is also why I am very happy to hear that their original shows (reboots really) are a smashing success.
