  • whole house fan for energy savings

i live in the sf bay area where it can get pretty hot during the day but always cools down nicely in the evening. ive been wanting to put in a whole house fan for a long time and finally did it today, what a great investment. instantly cools down the house by pulling the cool air from outside and exhausts through gable vents in the attic

$200 for the fan and got a guy off craigslist to install it for $250.

I can secoind 97guns statement. I have had a whole house exhaust fan for 20+ years. As long as eve temps drop to below 70 I am comfortable w/just the fan and no a/c.

Fans are MUCH cheaper to operate than a/c for a 1700 sq ft home.

In my current home I have a similar setup and usually use it during the cooling season when the overnight low temps are between 58-70. It usually shaves off $30-50 in electricity per month when in use. I paid $120 for the same unit on year end clearance in 2006 and $100 to install it in 2007.

In the past I had a window unit belt driven exhaust fan that also worked as well (until it quit working) and would be preference to use since you didn't have to pay anyone for installation. Unfortunately, these units aren't manufactured anymore.

We don't have that on our home, but with the cooler weather I have been able to leave the ac off, and run the whole house fan on the furnace to rotate air through the house, helps to combine the warm air from the main level with the cooler air in the basement. Windows are open, too! We have had many days lately with lower humidity, otherwise this plan would not work nearly as well.

Yes but it would require the user to adjust security settings of the computer, opening up the possibility for some unwanted script.
