  • Who is lying and telling the truth?

I am 18 years old and I am from a different country.

I have been talking to my uncle who has financial issue with my cousin and his family. My uncle is a businessman. My cousin and his family are farmers from very small city.

My uncle decided to invest 200,000 in this small city with my cousin and his family about ten years ago. Right now they have financial disputes. My uncle believes my cousin is a total theft and he is very smart. My uncle believes my cousin and his family know how to play with words. My UNCLE believes my cousin and his family are ****ing THEFS.

Couple nights ago.... My brother was telling my Uncle he wants do a favor for my cousin. My brother wants to help my cousin settle in different country with his wife. My uncle was telling my brother you shouldn't lend money to your cousin because his expectation will be more in the future if you give him such money. My uncle was telling my brother deal with this issue with strategy.

I am totally an ignorant kid with no knowledge about society in general. I know my uncle and I also know my cousin. I think both of them are great people. But my cousin is from a small city with no great education. He only dealt with farmers and so forth. I cannot comprehend how someone from a small city can be so cleaver. That is what my uncle is telling us. What is truth?

Do you think dealing with family is like business? Is that the reality of life? How can you compare doing business with someone and helping a family member?

I might be naive but I want to understand why money makes everything complex in life?

THIS sounds to me that I HAVE to be precise with every move I make in life dealing my closest family like parents and siblings.

WHAT IS the truth about life? Do I deal with every move and word with politics in order to successful in life?

This kinda life sucks in my opinion. HELP this ignorant kid to understand life.

The best advice that I can give you is to stay out of it. You'll be better off.

I will help family in many different ways, but I won't loan them money, because that can really put a strain on the relationship. If you don't treat it like doing business, then you may not get repaid. If you want to treat it like a gift, then that is fine, but very different from an investment.

autoexer, I don't know where you are from but different cultures have different thinking about mixing family, business and money. For example, in China, people prefer to do business, loan money and work with their family members. In the Philippines the culture expects individuals to help family whether they can afford it or not. In N American it is considered nepotism and negative to provide benefits to family members. 'Neither a lender or borrower' is the theme. We are advised to write contracts with each other and take those signed documents very seriously.

Experience has taught me that it's not a good idea to get between family members in a dispute. They both get angry with the person in the middle who was trying to help.
