Cost of Living 1938

That was during the Great Depression and there were plenty of undernourished people who did not have sufficient money to purchase a good diet.
I think my mother told me that it was during World War II that milk began being fortified with Vitamin D. So 1938 might be a little early to have been able to buy that. I'm really not sure if most milk was even being pasteurized by then, but probably so. Seriously doubt if it was sold in gallons--quarts and possibly half gallons of returnable glass jars.
My Dad tells me he went to the movies for $0.10 during the Depression.
Wouldn't it be nice if we did not have to take inflation into account in trying to provide for our futures?"There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

Sounds about right - a new house was 2x+ the average salary, and a new car was about 50% of average salary. Harvard was 25% of a year's salary.
So, today we have average income of $50k, average house price of $125-150k, average car of $25k. However, Harvard now costs a full year's salary instead of only 25%!
