I wouldn't go that route. They will buy it at a steep discount. You'd get more on trade, and you already said that no one will give you what it's worth.

You are better off trying to sell it outright.

The last car I sold, the guy didn't even want to take it for a test drive. I made him drive it. So, it worked fine for me.

I can't imagine buying a car without driving it, and I'm no car guy at all but I know enough to feel if it is driving okay, sounds okay, etc.

Meet in a busy, public place during the day. A good choice is the parking lot of your local police station.

It's clearly not a guarantee of safety but at least they have to leave their car at the police station which likely has cameras and I can tell other people where I will be, etc. thanks.

You could go always go there and get an estimate and then decide. Like bjl584 said, you will get more if is it a private sale. But, it was a quick and painless process when we sold a 13 yr old car a couple years ago. They took a look at the vehicle and then gave us a written offer (which expired after a couple of days, IIRC). They offered twice as much as the dealership did.

I've sold my car and motorcycle on craiglist. both of my experiece went smoothly. i always meet in a public spot. regarding test drive. I usually have the buyer hand me over his/her car keys to hold on to or some type of personal item like wallet with some type of ID that matches credit card or cash to hold on to incase if he they try to pull something funny. i have something to go to the police with. But like i mention earlier. my 2 transaction went smoothly. ONLY ACCEPT CASH OR CASHIER CHECK. if you decided to sell "AS IS", what i do is write something brief up thats states that and have both party sign it.

last tip-not all people on craiglist are scammers, you find legit people trying to get a good deal on a use car. so DON'T be greedy. sell the car for whats its worth or OBO

I've always sold cars privately with no problem. I prefer to meet prospective buyers at one of the larger shopping centres. It never occurred to me to take their picture but that's brilliant and I'll do so in the future. I've used both Auto Trader and the local CraigsList [Kijjiji} successfully. I also suggest telling your mechanic as they often know someone seeking a reliable vehicle.

There are some logistics to work out. The buyer needs to arrange for a bank draft for the entire sum less deposit if you've agreed to hold the vehicle for a set time plus insurance, registration and new plates. You need to retain plates and have WD40 & screw driver handy. We've facilitated by driving buyer to a nearby registry office but prefer they bring a friend to work through each step.

Last spring when DH was waiting to pick up our RV after it's spring, road ready tune up another guy struck up a conversation. He expressed interest in our smaller unit so DH invited him to check it out. The guy was complimentary and DH gave him the keys to try-out our rig. The chap called DH the next day and offered to buy the unit for more than we had paid 3 years earlier. Bt 8 PM we had a bank draft and someone else owned the RV.

We had good success selling a vehicle that the transmission went out on - on ebay. You might want to check it out.
