  • heard of any good phone scams lately?

was at my moms today and she got one that ive never seen before. she got the call and the person on the other end that says grandma, i need help. well she does not have any grandsons so she questioned it, then the caller calls her auntie. the story is he went to a funeral out of town and he got in an accident and arrested for dui, he needed bail money to get out of jail. he was in lots of pain and confusion due to the accident, thus the reason for calling her grandma. she asked him which nephew it was and he said the eldest again claiming confusion.

he said he will have the lawyer call her back with the fund transfer info in a few minute, she got no call back.

I've heard of this one. Here is the link to a Thread I started last week.

Unfortunately, my Grandma-in-law fell for that scam. IT just happened to be within a week of a close family friend falling for the same scam, in another state. GMIL was in such denial about it, that it helped I had an identical concrete experience to share. (It was easier for her to believe her grandson-in-law completely swindled her. Easier than that she fell for such a stupid scam. Which would have been ridiculous, and really bothered me as an in-law to the family. My dh's family can be a little crazy and illogical at times). OF course, her hearing is bad so I think she heard what she wanted to hear. & the story was fairly believable. (She kept insisting her used her nickname that only he uses, but this is someone who can barely hear anything in the first place).

There's always something. The common one these days is getting a call from "Microsoft" or something or other and them talking you into giving access to your computer.

Last night some slime robocalled numbers within my state claiming our financial institution issued MasterCard was locked, offering only the option of pressing "1" to be transferred to the security department. Our accounts with the authentic financial institution are old enough that we expect to see its actual number show up as caller ID, and not "Unavailable", and a human voice from the Fraud Squad.
