  • Filing taxes separately?

    Hi all,

Is it ok for my wife and I to file our taxes completely separately even though we're married? On our w4's we selected married filing joint.

Looks like that's how we can maximize our return for 2013 when entering our numbers in turbo tax and tax act.

    Thanks.

Yes, it is okay - I suggest that you run the software through both scenarios because the filing status MFS is NOT similar to each filing as single. There are significant differences. If You Have a Choice. If more than one filing status fits you, choose the one that allows you to pay the lowest taxes.

It doesn't matter what you selected on your W-4's. Double check your numbers, make sure you are choosing "married filing separate". There are only a few situations that will result in lower taxes when filling "married filing separate"; that is why I'm suggesting to double check your numbers, filing status, etc.

Of course the IRS is the "only" source for accurate info on the question, but this site http://taxes.about.com/od/filingstat...edseparate.htm can give in idea for what questions to look for at the IRS.
