The irony is the only things I mail are government related, so you can say they get me twice. Once when I pay the bill and another when I mail it. But, besides that I hardly mail.

I VERY, VERY seldom mail anything. I went to online bill pay when postag went up to o.39. Immediate family (kids & grands)is all local so cards & gifts are presented in person.

        That said:
Early this month I had to sign & mail papers on an inerited IRA.
I have to mail a couple new baby cards w/gift cards included.

We use stamps for thank you cards, chirstmas cards, birthday cards, etc... Pretty much it. Fax/email/text/Facebook is a lot easier to access and doesn't take nearly as long.

My daughter (18) has been writing to a friend who is at overnite camp for the summer. That's the only way to communicate (imagine that). The other day, when there was no return letter in the mail, she was jokingly complaining, "How did you survive this way?" She's of the generation that has never known any way other than instant communication - email, text, facebook, skype. Writing a letter and waiting a couple of days for it to reach it's destination, then waiting for them to write a reply and mail it back. It takes a week for one round, compared to sending 10,000 texts per month.

            * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
            * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
            * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Since I started using online banking (4 years ago), I use very few postage stamps. We went from 20-25 a month to maybe 5-10 a year.

Last Sat I read the news article that the price of stamps (again) would go up, so I hurried to Walgreen and bought some books. I think it went from $.46 to $.49... I am debating if I should go electronics (sending statements through emails) to reduce organization's op costs...
This is off topic and a bit after you posted, but I wanted to chime in - I also work with a non-profit, handling, among other things, their donor relations.

I've found that managing this through email is a great way to establish closer relationships with people - our organization is a theater company, and we just opened our summer season last night. I had great chats via email with many of our donors, which just leads to better cultivation.

And, yes, it reduces operating costs! We did one mailing drive earlier this year, and were actually much more successful when we followed up with emails.

The cost of stamps here in the UK is now pretty steep, the price went up earlier this year in March to the point of one 1st class letter costing 62p!

I try not to send letters that often now, I pay all my bills online and use online banking, although it is a shame the traditional art of writing and recieving letters in the mail is long gone!
