  • What Do You Do For Indoor Fun?

The icy cold weather this early January has made me even happier that I can turn to playing computer strategy games (see my post link at upper right) when going outside would ABSOLUTELY not be any fun for me.

What about you? What keeps you entertained and engaged when you have to stay indoors?

I certainly spend far more time than I should on the internet and my iPhone.

I exercise at home on my treadmill so that occupies 30 minutes or so 3-4 times each week.

When we're stuck at home, we're even more likely to cook and bake from scratch. Friday when we had a snow day, my wife made a batch of oatmeal cookies.

I don't watch much TV but we did all watch Monsters University the other night. We had gotten the disc from Netflix. We're waiting for Avatar to come so we will be watching that within the week most likely.

Of course, there is all the usual stuff: paying bills, starting to get everything in order to do our taxes, general cleaning, decluttering (see that thread), etc.

And ultimately, there really isn't all that much time to occupy. I get home about 5:30pm and I'm generally in bed by 10pm so between dinner, exercise, showering, and going through the mail, it doesn't leave much time to fill.

Last night I went to the gym for about an hour. Then when I got home I cleaned the bathroom, vacuumed the house, and folded some laundry. Then I got the fireplace going and relaxed by it watching a movie. It's too cold for outdoor stuff right now.

I needlepoint and play the Lego games with my husband - that is exactly my level of video-game-ability.

We're playing Lego Marvel Superheros right now on the PS4 and it is SO MUCH FUN!

We also watch a lot of movies and read.

I don't count working out as indoor "fun" so I'm not including that ;-)

I don't scrapbook but added photos, small mementoes and mini journal notes for an album of recent celebrations. DH thinks we'll enjoy these in later years and it was fun to remember small details. I like to sew so several projects needing completion were bumped to the top of the list. We were gifted 'The Butler' DVD, which I'd describe as a docu-drama, not at all what I expected. Read several books on Kindle, downloaded from library. Love this system free from return deadlines when driving is treacherous. Most of the folks that live in this complex have been working from home and learning the benefits. Lots of visiting back and forth. I'm so glad we're not trapped at an airport coping with cancelled flights!

I personally love board games. If you can gather enough people, it is far more entertaining to play a game with people than a video game by yourself.

I also enjoy a good working out. There are plenty of workout routines on youtube to follow.

I have a 7 yo, so we do kid-centric things mainly. The livingroom floor is currently a lego city, the last few days have been all about legos- both building and playing.

We play board or card games too. Or find a craft to do. Reading and watching movies too.

It's 63 degrees where I am right now. No complaints here for the moment, but we are still inside for some reason.

Years ago, I used to love to play Monopoly. And in college I can't believe how much fun I and my 3 suite-mates had just playing pinochle.

But currently I couldn't get 4 people together unless I was giving away money. So I am WAY thankful for my computer war strategy games!

Housework is NOT the Same as Fun

                  Ouch, bjl1584...

All those house chores you listed are work in my book!

I can relate to relaxing with a movie, but like I noted in my "Strategy Games: My Rainy Day Passion" blog post (see link above right), that's too passive to keep me engaged more than a couple of hours.

What do you do for FUN when you can't go outdoors?

When the weather is bad, but not bad enough to go ride snowmobiles, we build an RV in our garage from scratch.

How convenient, since most movies last "a couple of hours".

Actually, sitting and watching a movie is too passive for me anyway. I will always be doing something else while I'm sitting there - playing on my iPhone or laptop, reading the paper, whatever. I can't just sit and stare at a screen for 2 hours.

The gym is always fun. I enjoy working out.

I do like to play on the computer here and there. I have a few games that I play for fun.

I'm more than happy to spend a day inside if the weather isn't cooperative. What I do depends on if I've got friends over or just on my own.

With friends: games, games, games. Board games, card games, and everything in between. Cranium is a particular favorite among my group of friends, though I've learned a new dominos game while deployed ("42" or "Texas 42") that I'm going to have to teach them all... I enjoy hosting friends over for dinners, so I'll often cook up a big dinner, have everyone over, and just play games & socialize for hours on end.

                          On my own:
                          - Read books, or articles/forums online
                          - Computer games.... sometimes
                          - Work out
                          - TV/Netflix/Hulu (binge on a season of your favorite show? Or perhaps re-watch previous seasons of Sherlock in anticipation of the new episodes?)
                          - Say "forget the weather", bundle up, and go running anyway.
                          - Not my style, but some people (my GF for one) actually finds cleaning the house relaxing and enjoyable. I say "more power to you." haha

My time is usually spent chasing around and keeping my toddler happy. That's also my cardio for the day too.
