  • In times like now, its good to live below our means with an emergency fund

Alot of times I think.....why do I save so much....couldn't I buy more XYZ, or travel to ABC. Then a week like this one hits me!

My diesel truck has been in the shop for a few days and it looks like the cost will be roughly $3000-4000 to fix.
With that, my wife and I have been carpooling to work in her van. Yesterday at lunch, a big SUV pulls out into oncoming traffic and hits us. They were at fault and ticketed. We are fine, the van was hit in left front and I am guessing $5-8K in damage. The van is worth approximately 14K so we are hoping its not totalled.

Guess my point is, I am thankful that I am in a financial position were this is just an inconvience. When my wife and I were younger, made alot less money, and were less responsible with our money, something like this would have been a financial train wreck for us.

Glad you're okay. It is ALWAYS good to live below your means and have an EF.

I saw a patient yesterday who's mother died last week. He just casually mentioned that he had to take out a loan to pay for the funeral. This is a 55 year old guy so his mother had to be in her 70s at least. Neither she nor he had made any plan for funeral costs.

Our heater broke Wednesday night. It was repaired yesterday morning for just over $300 which, as you said, was more an annoyance than anything else. It's not even a blip in the big picture but for some people, it would be devastating.

I hear stuff like this all the time... it's so sad. We are definitely on the lower end of the "income" spectrum, but through years of savings i've been able to hit the $10K mark. Took a long time, but it's great to have "just in case". I also have a "mini EF" of a couple thousand for smaller incidentals, which has been a lifesaver over the last year!

When you live below your means, you are operating from a position of strength. That poor 55-year-old guy that had to borrow money to bury his mother is a prime example of how HELPLESS overspending can make you. And, in my book, if you are spending more than 80% of your take-home pay you are definitely overspending.
