  • Growth after 2008? Investments during recession...

Does anyone have any mention about positive holdings or investments after the fall of 2008?

Historically in a downward market, things like precious metals, commodities and consumer goods, oil, energy, and things of this nature rise in value or at least maintain their demand and position in the market. Precious metals did not do this after 2008. What did?

    Thanks!

It's not clear exactly what you're asking. You'd need to provide specific date ranges.

Regardless, 2008 was not your garden variety recession, so I don't think you should expect asset classes to have behaved in a particular manner.

      Hi,

you are right, it is strange that gold did not go up much after 2008, but it still could.

I have heard that things that are not correlated to the financial markets have done well.

These include rare art and rare stamps.

Partly because of the rise in the number of millionaires in China, these two collectables have increased in value.

It is always nice to be able to spot a trend before it happens though, so it is difficult to know what the best investments for the future will be.

Gold didn't go up much after 2008?

Gold had risen from approx. $900/oz to approx. $1900 an ounce from 2008 to 2012. It has since dropped to around $1200 an ounce. The precious metals reacted exactly as I would have expected during the period. The recent drop is due to the improvement in the economy, whether real or perceived.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you are asking?

After 2008, I concluded that putting my trust -- and my money -- in the hands of mutual fund managers was not a smart idea. So I sold off all my mutual funds and developed my own dividend-based investing strategy. I'm much happier now.
