I don't know if $50 is "a lot" to spend - I just don't remember spending more than that in cash.

I am 36 and have really traditionally paid everything by cash or check. (Not everyone took credit cards 20 years ago, but could always pay by check).

I have just never had any need to buy anything so "cash only". Sure, if I Was a flea market or an antique shopper, I'd have to carry a little more cash. (I think more to the point, when I Was young and cash was more prevalent I simply did not have any money! I always worked, but cost of living was expensive, and I paid my way through college, bought my first car, and so on. I bought a couple of cars with checks and cashiers checks over the years - never cash).

{I sold a car for $3,000 cash, and *that* made me uncomfortable. Probably carrying around $500+ would make me feel a little uncomfortable. Just risk of theft or loss. We immediately took that $3,000 to the bank. Phew!!}.

As I said, it is probably a generational thing. I'm 49.

I would never accept a check at an antique show, garage sale, or flea market. It was cash only or you weren't getting the merchandise. I don't know anybody who would take the chance of accepting a check from a total stranger. With my mail order business, I took checks regularly (this was in the days before PayPal) because I didn't have to ship the order until the check cleared. But for in person sales, it was strictly cash.

Using cold, hard currency? I don't really know...I can't think of any large transactions. It's definitely less than $500.

We bought our current home for cash, but that was a cashier's check, obviously.

I rarely use cash at all these days and pay for everything via credit card and then just payoff every month. So I would venture to say, largest cash purchase would be under $100.

If we're talking about actual currency, the biggest purchase I can think of is $300 for 40 bales of straw, delivered. I think I'm just not remembering far enough back in time though.

I bought a truck for $50,000 cash. I really should have financed it for 36 months.

I paid for a horse with $8,000 in cold hard cash. I went to the bank and they went into a back room and counted it out for me. Then I kept it in my freezer for two nights until I gave it to the lady to pay for the horse.

Other than that not much in actual cash. Maybe $500 for a Craigslist sofa. I've written much bigger checks, but as far as actual green currency that's all I can think of.

New laptop bought in May, when the other one 'died' on me. Around 1300 bucks. I just closed 2 personal bank accounts because of the insane commission I was paying. Most purchases now are small, so I just carry a little cash. For the bigger ones I can pay via PayPal or my company bank account.

Our largest cash purchase was our camper. I felt vulnerable carrying it.I brought $6000 but bargained down to 5100.

So it was quite literally COLD hard cash! Good way to freeze your assets!

Haha! I never thought of it that way!

I figured if my house burned down it would be safe in the freezer, and that a thief probably wouldn't go searching through freezer-burned leftovers on the off chance that some idiot stuffed eight grand in there...

I never knew you gambled steve. This surprised me quite a bit! Not trying to seem like I really know you that well, but judging by your posts over the past few years I never thought you would gamble ever, let alone with $300-500 @ a table game!

And I think the most cash I have taken out was $5000 ish for a car purchase. It wasn't even for me though. The funny thing is I road my bicycle to the credit union to get the cash out, and I had the money sitting in the bag on the front of my bike. I road my ass off to get home, the thought of carrying that much cash didn't really set in until I was about a half mile away from the bank and I was like "man I got like quite a few paychecks worth of cash in my bag, on my bicycle, infront of everybody". I live in a safe area with very low crime, but needless to say I hurried my ass home!

I am not that rich or really well off. I am a normal/ordinary person who doesn't own a car (but is thinking of buying one) I rent a house and such. But my biggest purchase in my life was when I bought an Iphone4 32gb a few years ago for $800.00 - at first, I was a bit hesitant on purchasing this because $800.00 is a large amount for me (I have my own savings in the bank but I really do not buy stuff ie. gadgets or whatever) but still I purchased it. Never regret it, loved it and after a few years after purchasing that particular gadget, I found myself having an Ipod touch 5th gen and an Ipad Mini and now, I am thinking of getting a car - if it is worth it or not.

It is very to seen that people carry cash in their pocket because this is time of carrying debit card, credit card etc. I am also don't carry so much of cash in my pocket. But when I purchase my bike I did full payment by cash and it around $9,500. It is my largest cash purchase in my life n I won't do it again.
