  • Round trip ticket vs. 2 one way tickets

So I am flying from tvc to sav and round trip tickets for 2 people would be $1,300. I search one way tickets and the total price would be $900. Is there any difference or reason I can't just by 2 one way tickets to and back?

I prefer OW tickets for more flexibility. For 400.00 less, I would absolutely buy 2 OWs.

There's no reason that you can't. If it's that much cheaper then go for it. You might not sit next to each other, but who cares.

I have never seen it being cheaper to get two one ways, what airliner are you with?

I fly my daughter back and forth between my house and her dad's three times a year. There is no savings whatsoever if I buy a RT ticket vs. two one way tickets. I always buy them one at a time. It's easier to watch the prices and get them when they are lowest if I don't have to come up with the full $1000+ all at once for a RT ticket.

The only reason to be cautious about buying 2 one way tickets is in case of flight changes/cancellations/etc. If you have a round trip ticket, the airline has more obligations about keeping your trip "whole", so if, for example, your outbound is delayed by a day, they would probably be willing to push your return trip back a day so that you have the same amount of time at your destination (you would, of course, have to ask for this, it's not automatic).

I also once bought a ticket in two one ways (the price was the same but the schedule was better on one airline for the outbound, but better for the return on the other). I wound up getting the flu, so I couldn't travel, but the outbound flight was cancelled due to bad weather, so I managed to avoid change/cancellation fees for that leg, but had to pay them for the other leg. If I had a round trip ticket, I could have gotten the whole trip cancelled and re-used the full credit another time. I have no idea what would have happened in this scenario if I had the two one ways on the same airline.

All that being said, for $400 in savings, I would probably roll the dice. I would consider carefully, though, the time of year (both in terms of possible bad weather and how full flights will be due to holidays, etc).

Normally the only way that two one way tickets cost less than a round trip ticket is if you buy last minute tickets. If you are flexible with flying times you can find some great deals and save a lot of money.

Wow, usually the round trip tickets are less expensive. Personally, I'd go with the least expensive no matter what. Haha just a cheap person I guess?
