  • How to follow investments?

    Hey guys,

I'm looking into a solid way of following my mutual funds and other market items. Is there a free application (be great if Chrome had something) that allow the following of specific funds and such? This wikiinvest chrome app is okay, but it doesn't recognize the Vanguard 500 index fund.

    Thanks!

On my phone it came with an app that had yahoo finace on it that I can look up and add funds to keep an eye on the market I only have my company stock and my Roth IRA right now but it looks to be a useful way to keep an eye on how the market is doing but its not keeping track of my personal investments.

Google Finance Portfolio is free, simple to set up and gives you quick picture of your holdings and their status

People have already mentioned good free apps so I won't add to that. However, I would suggest you follow the specific stocks and other investment components within your funds rather than monitor each fund as a whole. But that's up to you and how much you choose to be involved. After all, the fund manager is supposed to be doing that. On low risk funds I just trust the mgr and watch the fund as a whole. On medium and high risk funds I dive into the specifics and do my best to be informed.

Do you want your positions to be retrieved automatically, or is it acceptable to enter transactions by hand?

I'm curious what your point is here. Since you have no control over what the fund buys and sells, or when it buys and sells, what value do you find to tracking the individual holdings of your funds?

              Thanks so far all.

I like Google Finance so far. I'm okay with manually adjusting things - I have to anyway. The share amount for my 401k will change bi-weekly, so I'll at least be tweaking things once a month.

I'm not really interested in following specific stocks or things, bc my mutual funds are made of up tons of things - it wouldn't do me much good (especially when many portfolio tracker's allow the following of mutual funds).

The only things Google Finance seems to be lacking is some sort of history aspect. I wish it would plot from funds from yesterday, today, and so forth into the future. I'm not seeing anything like that so far. Thanks again!

Since you don't mind entering transactions, take a look at Morningstar's portfolio tracker.

I buy my stocks through Sharebuilders and they will show you how things are going and the percentage up or down, etc. with just signing in. After reading a book on finances a couple months ago, I started a spreadsheet of assets and liabilities and so each month I can see how all our different accounts are doing including our IRA that we open long before we were into Sharebuilders. Very interesting thing to do and an interesting way to track all of your income and outgo especially for those of us without phones with apps.
