So, yesterday I finally got around to applying for a massage therapist position at a local spa. And then yesterday evening I attended a mandatory meeting for the nail salon I have worked at for the last five years.
Right now I only work 13 hours a week there, and make approximately 1000 a month before taxes. No real benefits except some free products and services. I have a second job doing chair massage at the airport. Awesome environment, super fun, but as of right now no benefits. We voted to unionize last month but have not begun negotiations. I work about 20 hours a week there and make about 2000 a month before taxes. My daughter and I are both on my husband's insurance plan which costs us about 260 total a month.
The spa job I just applied for would pay around 30 an hour. They do have benefits but I don't know how good they are or how much they would cost. I also don't know how many hours it would be. I believe that benefits for MT's start at 25 hours a week, unless things have changed.
So the nail salon job is rolling out their brand new benefits package for full time (32 hours a week) employees. Significantly better health insurance at 90$ a month for just me. Short term disability, long term disability, vision, dental, and life are all paid for in full by the company. Furthermore they are instituting profit sharing bonuses each quarter which are partly automatic and partly tied to location performance. No idea what the numbers might be like on this. I would also get my vacation pay back at full time hours. I used to get around 3 weeks annually. Everyone gets sick pay already.
My initial plan was to get a part time job at the spa, keep my part time hours at the airport, and drop the nail job as it pays the least. Now I am really conflicted. I kind of want to see what the spa is offering in terms of benefits first, and then make my decision form there.
I could, in theory, work 3 10's and one half day at the nail salon, and keep two of my days at the airport. This would bring in around 1200 from the airport, and 2700 from the nail salon. The hours would be significantly more than I work now. I suppose even if I cut back to one day at the airport I'd still be making more, and would always have the option of picking up sub shifts.
OTOH, I could also work 1 or 2 days at the spa, and 3 and a half at the nail salon. But out of all the options I enjoy working at the airport most. I have worked at the spa in the past. It pays well, but I don't love love love it. I really dislike the manager at the name salon too, and intentionally work on days that she is not there. You would think if they really wanted to attract people they would clean up some of the labor violations in addition to adding benefits as well. But oh well. The airport and spa are a lot better about giving breaks and not requiring unpaid work.
I was totally ready to drop the nail salon like a hot potato and move on. Now I am conflicted. I'm in somewhat of an advantageous position because the job market for both manicurists and massage therapists is extremely good right now. Both of my current jobs want me for more hours, and the spa has had openings for years.
