  • Credit monitoring, fraud alert, or credit freeze?

    1) Credit monitoring service such as Identity Guard, Lifelock, Experian, Trans Union, etc

    2) Fraud alert for 90 days for free but self-managed

    3) Credit freeze for approx. $20 to freeze credit and approx. $20 to unfreeze credit I believe self-managed as well.

    I am planning to do credit freezes to all 3 of my credit agencies but I'm not sure I know enough about what it entails and the possible ramifications of doing so. I'm not planning to take out any credit anytime soon so I figure on freezing all 3 credit agencies to protect myself from possible fraud and the nightmares that come with stolen identities. Does anyone have information about the advantages/disadvantages of putting a credit freeze on my credit?

    After submitting this thread I came across this article by Clar.k Howard;

    According to the article, the non-victim rate for Equifax for California (I live here) is $10 for each freeze, date range lift, specific party lift, permanent removal, or replacement pin. However, I see in Indiana it is free (Wow). In New York it is $5 for each fee.

    Froze all 3 credit bureaus tonight at $10 each via each of their websites for a total of $30. I don't foresee myself taking out credit for at least a number of years so the $30 cost I considered to be worth it for the peace of mind. It'll cost another $30 later to unfreeze should I wish to pursue more credit but it'll be worth it to me for the added level of security.

      We froze ours after having stolen CC numbers. Very easy.
