I just received a check from "American Airways" in the mail today for $1229. Problem is, "American Airways" isn't a real company. The letter with the check instructs me to call an 800 number. I didn't call, but I can only imagine what sort of information they will ask me for.

I'm sure that none of the regulars here will fall for this, but to any lurkers or newbies out there, don't fall for this!

I live in Western PA near Pittsburgh. I'm not sure if this scam is nation wide or localized to my area. But, rest assured it is a scam.

An acquaintance in San Francisco got one, so it may be nationwide.

And hey -- I was born in Westmoreland county (small world)

Two months earlier my spouse received a voucher "payable to "US Airlines" for $1169. Apparently in earlier years the outfit offered round-trip tickets of greater value.

"We have attempted contacting you several times without success. This is our last attempt. If we do not hear from you soon, we may need to issue the ticket vouchers to the alternate."

Tens of millions of alternates out there, I assume, considering this has gone on for years. Getting direct mail addresses for those millions of people must eat up the scant profits they get.

This is so stupid. No phone? No e-mail? No mail prior to "our last attempt"? I can understand one time being a last attempt but not "several times without success."

The website mytsonline.com looks cheap and scammy, no mention of principals or exec team, no snail-mail address or direct e-mail. Worse, the technical, admin details of the website domain's WHOIS listing are privacy-protected. Really putting their names out there, with false airline names, obscuring company information... ewwwwkay.

We didn't fall for this, but it's not like the mystery company is going all-out to convince people of its authenticity.

DH received something similar recently. Fortunately he knows to come to me and ask if it's legit. (He's smart enough to figure things like that out himself but it's much easier for me since English is my primary language but his secondary.) I told him it was bogus.

I feel bad for people who through no fault of their own are not smart enough to realize that it's a scam and may fall for it.
