My wife is in need of individual health insurance. I don't even know where to start, because previously we've always been covered under my work plan. I am in Dubai, and all of my health needs are covered by my employer. Most likely, I could expense her medical, too, but this isn't a given. Besides, it would come out of my budget, so I'd like some cheaper options.
To this end, basic needs for her:
Long term or catastrophic care
Deductible can be high, but I don't know how "high" high is
Office visits of $50 or less would be appreciated; $100 would be acceptable
Ability to stay with her long-time ob-gyn who accepts almost all insurance
Meds somewhat less than "arm and leg" - generic coverage discount at least would be nice
Something I left out? Make suggestions
I don't even know what else to look for.
Where do I start?
Additional information: very good to excellent health overall; smoker; nominal age 29, but I'm in my low 50's (you'll have to read between the lines on that one, because I'm NOT explaining); active; good ht/wt ratio; excellent credit (if that matters, and since it matters in everything else, I figured I'd mention it here). We live in Texas, if that's needed (and since I think insurance has lobbied Congress to keep it from going across State lines, it probably is).
PS The reason I don't know what else to look for is that I go to doctors only for hand or eye injuries, chest pains, and arterial bleeding, almost none of which I've experienced.
