Re: Things that used to be free

If I buy gas at a gas station that has an air compressor and I need air in my tire I just ask them to turn it on for me after I pump the gas and I move my car around to the air hose, they always oblige.

Look, not to pick at you, but the way you phrased that as "wasting" money seems kind of judgmental.

If you choose not to do it, that's fine. We all buy what we value. But I'm not on here saying what you buy is a waste of money or laughable and I would appreciate the same consideration.

I didn't say anything directly to you. I was making a general statement. I don't believe that I berated anyone for their choices...I was just giving my opinion. However, I'm not going to continue making a big deal out of it. You are right. I shouldn't have used the word "wasted". It was a bad choice of words. So, I'm sorry if I offended you any way.

I remember those days...same thing with appliances. Now Lowe's will run a deal and you have to send a rebate to get free delivery.

I hate paying for air for my tires! Some stations charge while others don't. And full service...what a joke! No one offers it anywhere here.

Until I was 16 prescriptions were free with my dad's medical insurance. Then they were a dollar for a couple years and then $5. Those days are long gone.

Most of our state parks charge a $3 to $5 fee for parking, but our local county parks are still free, though if you consider our greenways levies, they just take it out on taxes.

All our local parks are free with the exception of the highest use parks where a fee is used to cut the numbers of people.

We do have to pay for beach driving permits and a nominal amount for camping.

I remember when you could write to most ball players and get a free autographed picture. Try that today!

Directory Assistance, once upon a time, was free. Now it's at least a buck-fifty per 411 call, unless you're listening to an ad through 1-800-free411 or something.

And believe it or not, I had a nice system getting free dial-up for a while through all the AOL free trials -- you'd get about 6 months free through the install CDs they sent through the mail, and you could extend the free trial for at least a couple months when you called to cancel. If they actually did let you cancel instead of offering an extension, you could cancel and reinstall another free AOL install CD you'd gotten through the mail. Repeat indefinitely.

I stopped doing it, though, because I couldn't stand AOL any longer. Internet for dummies (no offense to any AOL users out there). Plus taking it on and off my computer all the time seemed to slow it down.

Call 1-800-free411 or 1-888free411. It's free from a landline, and if you're calling from a cell phone, you pay only for air time. The only other "cost" is listening to a 15-20 second ad.

Well, I bet those ballplayers who gave the free autographed pic didn't make the millions the ones do today who charge!
