Best vacuum and compact steam cleaner?

I have a very old Dyson Animal. I was thinking of upgrading.

In your opinion (if you tried several) what is the best (preferably more compact) vacuum cleaner? And I think I'd like to get a small compact steamer too. I have a todder and a rug. Those 2 don't mix together very well.
