This has nothing to do with savings (unless someone left you an inheritance )

How many of you are tracing your family tree? I started this venture about 7 years ago when my hubby and I married. He has been tracing his family history for many years now. He started with his grandmother's death certificate and now he has volumes!! He even has pictures on our family room wall of ancestors right up to our current family pictures! Even a wall where we proudly display our sons' pictures who are currently in the Navy and onboard ship!

I have traced my family tree back to 1777. I even registered with the Lawrence County Alabama archives and this opened up a new world for me! I found out my ancestors really made history in the South. It's a wonderful pasttime and I am hearing from new relatives every year now! I just received an e-mail from a second cousin telling me how we are related!

Ancestry.com and rootsweb were websites that really inspired me. I found many ancestors there.

I know a lot of people like familysearch.org. As far as I know, all of those resources there are free. My wife's also from Alabama and we've been doing that stuff for the past couple of years. It's almost addictive how much fun it can be!

When I was 16 I started tracing the maternal line in our family. I did it with pen and paper and lots of airmail stamps as my Mom was first generation American. It was fascinating. I would love to get back into it as I know it has probably increased tremendously as the generation I am part of grew up. I'll try those websites, Thanks

Wow thanks jmjj215 for the familyresearch.org website! Neither hubby or I have been there and it is free!!! We're very excited again because there are some names on here that we didn't find on the other websites!

Alabama has a wealth of information on genealogy and I know your wife must be enjoying it like I am! Happy searchin'!

Really Ima there's nothing to this! Just go to the websites and type in your ancestor's names. Also test the Social Security Death Index by typing in someone who you know has passed and watch their name come up and also the place of residence where they were born, birthdate and place and date of death. SSI is usually found on any genealogy site.

              Go to these sites:

              (1) familysearch.org
              (2) Ancestry.com
              (3) Rootsweb.com

It's fascinating! You can even type the word genealogy in your search engine and even on Google! Amazing, amazing LOL. One of your best sources will be the older generation. They can remember things that will benefit you the most. Try to do this before they get too old though as I have my last living relative of my mother's siblings, my aunt, who is 90 and she has forgotten the names of my two older sisters. She knows me because I call her often and send her cookies ....but anyway she was a very good source of information for my family tree! Try it!!

I have tried ancestry.com and it looks like you have to pay to look at any records. They show the name but once you click on it, the site goes to a pay for deluxe thing. Am I doing it wrong?
