  • Culture & Finance

    Hello guys,

I a new on this chatroom. I am a French student, currently studying in Guadalajara (Mexico).
I am doing a research about the following subject: Language, Culture and Finance in an international context.
I have already read some papers about the influence of language on finance and savings especially te study of Keith Chen)

So now I would like to ask you your opinion about culture and finance.
    - According to you, does your culture have an impact on the way you save (of spend) your money?
    - If there an influence, a relation between the nationality/culture of an individual and the way he deals with savings?

I will be very grateful for your help !!

Personally, I don't think culture has that much of a direct impact on financial decisions. However, I think it might appear that there are cultural differences due to accompanying differences in socioeconomic status and education level.

I don't know... I used to date a guy from Greece (before their economic crash). One of the big differences we kept coming across was that I wanted to buy a house. You know, the American way, with a mortgage. He couldn't even wrap his brain around that. There, you live with your parents till you marry, and if they can afford it, your parents gift you with a house (apartment or condo-style, not a freestanding home). If they can't, you rent. Unless you make so much money that you can afford to buy an outrageously priced house with cash.

This way of thinking, among many other things, is one of the reasons we just didn't work out.
