I usually buy one ticket weekly. If we couldn't afford it we wouldn't do it.I would have so much fun giving away 3/4 of that money .

You have about the same chance of dying of rabies in the usa as you do of winning powerball (i think there were 2 deaths in 2012). I would buy a powerball ticket before I would pick up a racoon.

I remember buying tickets twice, and both times it was for the "entertainment value" of buying in with a group of friends/coworkers as a diversion when the jackpot was huge. It was fun to have the "what if" discussions/fantasies even tho we knew we wouldn't win. Once I put in $5 and once I I just put in $1. The first time was about 10 years ago and the second time was 2 years ago.

At work there is a regular pool and I do not contribute.

I have those conversations and fantasies without buying the tickets. Like you said, I know I won't win.
