What was the most outrageously indulgent item you ever bought.

When my son was playing the drums, i bought him an acoustic drumset for about $800. That was all well and good. But, then i had the bright idea that he would really enjoy a Roland TD-8 electronic drumset for $1000. I did buy it used and that was the used price, the new ones are up to $5K. Anyway, turned out he didn't really like playing drums all the much. I did manage to sell the Roland for $500. I still have the acoustic set and DD (11) plays it for fun. She isn't taking lessons on it though cuz i bought her a piano (which she DOES play and is sticking with. )

Actually, it was our first house for $39,000.

We had NO plans to buy for another 6-12 months but just went out 'looking' at open houses to see what our planned funds would buy. we had just done some redecorating in our apt.

The place was PERFECT. Everything matched the colors/design we already had - even the new stuff we had just added and our lease was coming up for renewal so we put in a bid & bought.

Our second was quite similar. Knew we wanted/needed a larger place (2nd kid planned, hubby needed a home office). Dropped 1 yeatr old on parents and went to open houses to see what was available in/near our price point. This was the FIRST place we hit. 37 years later, kids grown & gone, DH passed on & I still live there. LOIVE the location.

Probably the most indulgent item I've bought is an audio system (DAC/amp/speakers) for about $2k. But it really isn't that indulgent considering many audiophiles spend $10-20k or more. I'm also considering buying a backpacking tent for $600 which I'm sure many people would find ridiculous, but backpacking gear can be expensive!

Diamond ring, $23,000.

I wear it all the time, so I get good cost-per-use out of it.
And I bought it wholesale and could easily afford it.

This car. There really is no justification for buying a sports luxury vehicle from a financial point of view. The opportunity costs of investing that money instead is quite high. Only upside is I plan to keep it for quite a while longer. I think it will take another 10 years for me to hit 50k on the odometer.

For many, many years I've used daily shower spray. And for the last year or so I've been using toilet tank drop ins. There is ZERO justification for either of those. I use them so I can go longer between cleanings which equates to sheer laziness on my part. Not a single big-dollar purchase, but it adds up over time.

I've always been a big electronics guy, but back in middleschool/highschool I had 2 such extravagant purchases.

1) Sony walkman. This was an imported extremely slim cassette tape player that cost $500. Completely digital, as in even the radio was tuned digitally rather than with that vertical scrolling thingamabob. It was great at first, but CD media was already taking over and somehow at the time I figured cassette tapes would never completely be phased out.

2) Portable TV. At around $400, I got a bit more use out of this one. My parents never knew about it and it was great whenever I got grounded, or family trips, etc.

If I could go back would I buy it again? Definitely no.
