I technically was homeschooled part of my freshman year of high-school and my sophomore year. In reality, I was completely responsible for my own education. I took coursework through a University (North Dakota I think??) that had a high-school curriculum. I did fine on everything except for the Algebra class - my parents eventually hired a tutor to work with me for that one. My sophomore year I worked at a local elementary school as a teacher's aide while also working on my classes. I really enjoyed that time, and feel that it gave me time to grow and mature a bit before starting back to "regular" school my Junior year. (I'd completed 7th/8th grade in one-year, so was at least six-months younger than other classmates.)

If I ever have a child, I would like to homeschool them. (I am a certified teacher for Pk-6 with more than 12 years of teaching experience. So I think I could probably do a good job of it. )

      An Update from me:

We homeschooled all 3 kids up until this past year. I currently have an 18 year old, a 16 year old, and a 12 year old.

The 18 year old is the one with some special needs. He is now going to the local community college and getting all A's in his program.

My 16 year old is at a charter/public high school, his first year in a school, and is on the A/B honor roll and taking honor's level classes in his core subject areas. He has done so well that he has qualified, and will go, to the local community college for his Junior and Senior year do the dual enrollment program, finishing high school with a diploma AND an AA degree. He plans to then go to a four year college and is aiming for a STEM major.

My 12 year old is still homeschooling this year but will go to the local PS next year (highly rated.) He will be in the gifted program. His standardized test scores in 6th grade were at the 11th-13th grade level. He needs to be challenged more.

So, to those of you who think homeschooling is a sub-par education or that we can't possibly know what we are doing.......whatever.

My kids are thriving! (and no they aren't socially inept)

Believe me, after 16.5 years working in public education, I can testify that homeschoolers do NOT have any corner market on socially challenged kids!
