  • DMV, city, state, country RANT

i went to DMV today to get my dad a handbook for a written test he needs to take in 2 months. got there and the line was out the door at least 50 people long. i ignore the line because there's no way im waiting in it for a handbook and i go into the building, walk right up to the desk and look around for handbooks, none around so i begin my exit, half way out the lobby i see a huge rack full of handbooks, YESS!!!!!

i begin rumaging through the various different handbooks and they have every language on the rack except english. they had spanish, vietnamese, chinese, indian, everything in the world except english, the language of a country we live in. i felt like flipping the fricking rack over

another Rant i have to unload is the IRS, my mom files through the mail and she had to drive 10 miles to the office to get the papers, i tried to order them online for her and they were out of stock, what the hell is this country coming to?

Unlike a business, which has to provide superior goods and services at competitive prices in order to stay in business, municipal offices are in the fortunate situation of not having such burdens. Rather, they are bound by taxpayer funding and bureaucracy, a very strict 9:00-4:30 work schedule with a mandatory 60 minute lunch, and have no actual reason to put in extra effort (what, are people going to NOT go to the DMV, or visit another one for better prices or service?).

Regarding the handbooks, it would not surprise me if they simply ordered 50 of each, rather than measure usage and reorder accordingly. Do they have downloadable PDFs?

Since DMV is a State program, try an on-line search State, DMV and 'contact' at the bottom of their page to call or e-mail the top Administrator asking for his assistance in obtaining the publication you need. I'm guessing that the publication is likely available in a PDF format which you could print out for your dad.

I'd also contact the Executive Assistant of your State representative and ask for their assistance in stocking publications in English at the location you visited. You are paying these people's salary and you may as well use the service they have the power to provide.
