  • The Best Way to Save on Medicines

The cost of medications continue to go up, especially when it comes to antibiotics. To ensure
that we won’t have to reach for our pockets to buy them, we need to maintain our health. To
achieve that, we should get enough exercise on a regular basis. Aside from that, we should also
take a multivitamin supplement in conjunction with a healthy diet.

What more do you all think we should do to stay health all the time, so we can save money on medicine and unnecessary hospital visits?

The best way to save on medicines is to shop around. You might be surprised at the difference between different outlets (your local pharmacy versus the chain stores versus the grocery stores...) One of the medications I am on runs me $10.00/month at Target. The same medication runs me about $6.75 at Kroger.

Talk to your doctor about generics. If one is available, it might be worth looking in to. Caveat- Not all generics are created equal. For instance, people on Synthroid (a medication for an underactive thyroid) may find that they don't do as well on certain brands of generics.

Check to see if any of your local stores offer free prescriptions. Our local Publix offers certain generic antibiotics at no cost. They are hoping that while you are waiting for your script to get filled, you will fill up your cart with some of their higher priced groceries.

Check to see if you can get the prescription for less if it's ordered in 3 month supplies via mail order.

One last tip: If it's a brand name medication, you can ask your doctor if they have any discount cards available for that script. The discount cards are provided by the drug companies themselves. A certain medication that I had to be on for about a year ran $60/month because it wasn't part of my insurance formulary. I mentioned to the doc that I couldn't afford to keep taking it and he had me fill out a form from the drug company. In return, they sent me a discount card that gave me the script for $20/month.

If you are truly in a hardship position, ASK. Many drug companies have hardship programs that can help you pay for your necessary medications.

lorraineb, I am looking at saving on medication by staying health, I think staying health is a great way to save on medication, since beside losing money on medication, we also lose time at hospital visits. It is a fact, we will always get sick if we do not adopt a personal health lifestyles, and we will spend more time and money on hospital visits and medications
