  • Dodged a $$ Bullet

Received a call while I was at work from my daughter in college (summarized below):
Daddy-o, can you transfer some money into my Wachovia account? That’s never a good introduction. Reason: need to buy some things in preparation for my upcoming spring break (she is going to Louisiana with church group to help repair homes affected by Katrina). Noble cause, I surmise.

I have online access to the account and review it daily, so I interject that I notice that her monthly apt rent has not cleared along with a few other “pending” transactions. (Note: she is one of four sharing an apt. and she collects the money and makes payment each month), so I am told that one of her roommates was late coming up with her portion of the rent resulting in an after hours deposit to the bank which correlates to a hold on the deposit until after x o’clock the next afternoon…blah, blah, blah. I go on to share the likelihood of multiple overdrafts if the rent check goes through before the Wendy’s, Starbucks, Target, Walmart, etc. which are $30 a pop (just for the bank’s fee). She had her first lesson in “insufficient funds – overdrafts” to the tune of $120 late last year Nov/Dec. The bank was able to “talk Dad off the ledge” by eliminating all but one $30 fee. I did initiate overdraft protection …but not enough to cover apt. rent!

I told her NOT to make any more ATM or debit card transactions until everything clears. To make a long story short….the next morning showed that the transactions came through in the proper order to prevent overdraft fees. Dad (actually daughter) catches a break, the banking gods shined on us.

I'm too embarrassed to tell you how many checks I bounced in college.

Let's just say I didn't trust myself to open another checking account for years! Been good (just one lapse) ever since.

Yikes Can the roommates all write a separate check and pay it to the landlord that way.

yeeeeeeeeeee..... I must say, I've only overdrafted once and the bank just automatically toom money from savings account to cover for the insuffient funds on the checking account. Wish more banks did that instead of killing you with the overdraft charges and the insurance!

My teen years were a disaster of overdraft issues! Glad it worked for her this time!

I got the over draft protection, but it still cost 5$ each time to withdraw from my savings. I finally have a 'missing' thousand, no fee and no time owrries (I have no bills over 1000) it works, but it does tie up a thousand. (I just drop a one from the thousands place in my back book)

I have to agree everyone write their own checks for rent out. If one doesn't have their share atleast the others know they've paid their share & if it continues they need to look for a new room mate

You may also want to consider eliminating that atm/debit card. Afterall, you don't pay as much attention to what your balance is in your check book when you hand over a card vs a check we often write the # & amt in the register the minute we write it out so we know everythings ok.

Also if you haven't noticed nothing clears on Monday, deposits but usually no w/d. Just an observation from my few years in the banking biz. + I recall having to deactivate several debit cards for young adults who abused them.

my daughter learned this lesson when she turned 18. She truly thought that if she called the bank and checked the balance that it was okay to spend the money. I had to explain the way it was. I really thought that I taught her this. it is truly amazing the things the kids don't automatically know.

Bank of America charged $29 for the first overdraft, and $39 for the second--- unfortunately due to a check that took a few extra days to clear, I had my first and second on the same day before I could set up overdraft. That was a painful mistake. I can't tell you how quickly i linked my savings account to my checking acct to avoid that happening again. Not to mention, I am making sure not to be that close to a zero balance.

When I was in college, most landlords wanted one check, not 3 or 4 or 5. I suspect that is the case for the majority of landlords with college-aged tenants.
