First off, why no Insurance section in the forums? Seems to me like it would be a very valid topic for this site.

Anyway, I lost my job last month, now I have a new job that provides ZERO benefits, just a much fatter paycheck than what I was making . So now I have the pleasure of searching for my own insurance provider. Im a little overwhelmed to say the least. Here's the situation, my wife has benefits and she can get insurance for herself for almost nothing ($100) Add me and our daughter (6/mo old) and now its $1200/mo!! To summarize, that's with a $6000 deductible... yuk.

All that for 379.00/mo ?! Thats for just me and my daughter. Is that website broken or am I missing something? Huge thanks for any insight provided.
Are you kidding me? I went to that same site (because I am self-employed), and I pay $80.24/mo. for Blue Cross Blue Shield for just me ($3,500 deductible).

Are you looking at COBRA? COBRA is a rip off!

You should research some other companies. I even had a pre-existing condition (which stays on your record for 5 years).

        Good luck!

Honestly I'm confused as to why your wife's family health insuracne will rise that dramatically with the addition of a spouse and a kid but that plan looks decent. You will be paying a huge chuck on the bill if you or your daughter is hospitalized:

          "Hospital Services Coverage:
Emergency Room $200 Access fee (waived if admitted) 30% Coinsurance after deductible
Outpatient Lab/X-Ray 30% Coinsurance after deductible
Outpatient Surgery 30% Coinsurance after deductible
Hospitalization $500 Additional Deductible, then 30% Coinsurance after annual deductible

          Maternity Coverage:
Pre & Postnatal Office Visit 30% Coinsurance after deductible
Labor & Delivery Hospital Stay $500 Additional Deductible, then 30% Coinsurance after annual deductible"

But the Individual Deductible is $1,500 & Annual out of pocket limit is $3,000, so you max out of pocket is only $4,500 as long as you stay within Cigna's network.

Also the deductible is individual and not family, so you could pay a maximum in network cost of $9,000 (if you and your daughter both have catastrophic medical costs in the same year) vs $14,400 in premium costs not including the deductible if you go wih your wifes plan.

I would also get a couple of quotes from: http://finder.healthcare.gov/

            Thanks for the replies fellas.

@ effen Yes, I realize that... not sure why anyone in their right mind would go without health insurance... one would have to completely lack any semblance of personal responsibility, especially if he/she had a family to take care of... Anyway thats besides the point.

@ jeroenwaning That sounds pretty good but im not looking for a super basic plan and I would like my deductible to be relatively low. My plan also needs to include preventative care and flat charges for office visits. I thought that 379 was low, but now Im thinking that sounds about right. I guess the shock of how much cobra or joining my wifes plan would have costed (~1100 - 1200/mo ) actually set my expectations high what I expected to pay for insurance.

I went ahead and applied for the same plan, but included my wife on there as well. With the dental "rider" it came out to 629.00/mo. Thats for what I would consider good insurance, but thats just me. The interesting part will be whether we get approved or not... I cant imagine why we wouldnt because we are a very healthy couple, with a healthy baby. My wife does have bulging discs in her neck, but she doesnt require further treatment for them. I was completely honest in the app, so we shall see if that becomes an issue.

@muexm Thanks for pointing these details out. I was indeed aware of those costs. If something really bad does happen, we have the money to cover the out of pocket maximums.

Thanks again for the replies. I will let you all know if we get the shaft from Cigna for that one pre-existing condition.

                    General Insurance

General Insurance covers a range of insurance that seek to cover protection and security against different areas of hazards mainly property, assets, vehicle, health, life, auto, money lending and various other forms. One should opt for one as per his/her needs and affordability to get safe and relieved.
