I do our taxes, and have only used software twice, one of those being 2011. I've used TurboTax both times and buy the cd. I've already acquired TT for 2012 awaiting final documents and government revisions.
I've used Turbotax for many years. I think I buy the CD but I might have downloaded it last year. If you download it, it is not out on the Internet but still on your computer - just no CD to throw away. The first year is a little time consuming because you have to input everything but after the first year, the information gets transferred from the previous year so it is much easier (I only mention this as my dad complained loudly the first year but now he loves it).
We also use Turbo Tax online (have never used the CD) - the last 3-4 years. Previously used a CPA, but our finances are fairly straightforward. Nice since it imports previous years' information.
I've used both TurboTax and Tax Act online. I usually do my taxes in both to see if either of them find something the other doesn't, then file with the highest refund one - usually that's TT.
After reading about all these posts about tax software programs I feel pretty archaic (lol). I'm still doing my own taxes with pencil & paper. I go to my public library in order to gather all the necessary booklets and forms and download the forms which the library may not have in stock. And since I rarely ever get a refund, I really have no incentive to e-file a refund so I'll be begrudgingly mailing in my check each year.
