This American Life did a story on doppelgängers and it included a story on possible uses of pork 'bung' - when they say about pigs "we use everything but the squeal" they could be referring to is the possible use of the r*tum sliced into rings and sold as imitation calamari. Maybe I should not have posted this but I think I have another reason not to eat it.
Though the story was about 'bung' (the industry term for it), they only heard second hand that it was used thusly. They included the statistics about fish substitutions in restaurants.
The conclusion of the story is they don't know if it happens but the testers could not tell the difference when they taste tested bung vs calamari.
