  • Student insurance in Germany?

Hello, is anyone currently studying in Germany? I need to know where to get a good health insurance plan in Germany, preferably near Frankfurt as that's where I'm located.

I'm want a plan that isn't too expensive, but decent. I'm a student so I don't have too much money.

If anyone could help me with this I'd really appreciate it!

    Thanks in advance!

Students under the age of 30 or until their 14th academic semester are eligible for public health insurance in Germany, or if they choose, they may take out insurance from a private company. Please note: once a student takes out private health insurance, he or she cannot change back to public health insurance the course of study.

Public health insurance is offered to students at a reduced rate, around 78 € per month. A network of non-profit companies in Germany work with the State to provide the national healthcare program. You are free to choose the company with which you would like to be insured.

Students over the age of 30 or after their 14th study term are not eligible for public health insurance at the student rate. They may either take out voluntary health insurance with one of the public health funds or they may insure themselves through a private health insurance provider.Private health insurance costs vary depending on the amount of coverage provided.

You should be able to contact the university for information about the public health insurance option for foreign students.

      Hi!

Muexm explained really well how the public insurance goes, but if you decide to take a plan from a private company you need to be careful. I've had some friends there who ended up paying huge amounts of money for some simple medical services just because their plan didn't cover them well enough.

So do your research before you go to Germany.

I'd recommend you take a look at the plan at http://www.mawista.com/en/, it's meant for foreign students so it shouldn't be too expensive. You can apply online too.

I used them for my little trip to Munich for the OktoberFest festival, I didn't have any problems whatsoever. Read a lot about different plans and companies, then decide for yourself.

      Good luck on your studies!
