Well they say that America is going to control the security, but I don't see the point in creating high paying jobs and giving the jobs to foreigners. America is desperate for decent jobs and there are many Americans that desperately need jobs to support their families.
Paying another country to run the ports just drains more money out of our economy. It's a bad idea from many angles.
The fact that the company is Arab DOES make a difference, because many of the 9/11 terrorists had direct ties or were from the Arab Emigrate Republic. Allowing an AER-based company to manage our ports would make it that much easier for terrorists to slip into this country by passing as an employee, etc. etc.
What was Bush THINKING? Is he insane? This from the man who wants to leave as his legacy the routing out of middle east terrorists
no pun intended, but I smell something fishey here.... not sure what, but something just doesn't sit well with me about this deal...
I mean, is it just me, or did all this just come out of no-where?
and that fact that Bush is ADAMENT about getting this to go.... that just makes me wonder also.
I just can't believe, with all the different company's in this great land that we live in - that one of them can't do the same job, for the same price?
The president is sort of acting like these folks are the ONLY folks on the face of this earth that can do the job... I just can't swallow this pill he's trying to feed me.
I've been watching the news today & am getting more confused the more info I get. It seems Pres. Bush was surprised about the deal too, and now I just heard there is no way out of the deal, it has already been signed???
The new company could be managing the ports here within one week. Done deal.
Sure seems odd to me. I'm against selling out jobs or land to those companies from other countries, regardless of who they are.
The surprise announcement relieves some pressure from a standoff between President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress, which has threatened to block the deal because of the UAE's purported ties to terrorism.
Under the offer coordinated with the White House, Dubai Ports World said it will agree not to exercise control or influence the management over U.S. ports pending further talks with the Bush administration and Congress. It did not indicate how long it will wait for these discussions to take place.

Like I said... I smell something fishey
The fishy stuff going on is that one member of the Bush administration ran the original company that bought up all the port admins put them together into a package to sell to the British company that eventually sold to UAE and there is some other connection in Bush's admin - I think one of the under secretaries
-- here it is - One of the top execs at the Dubai company, Dave Sanborn, was appointed by Bush in January to a transportation department post overseeing maritime concerns.
Doesn't this just torque your undies?
I apologize for the fuzzy/sketchy info but the financial bits were mentioned when the news first broke and who can keep track of anything after our VeeP 'shot a guy in Reno just to watch him die'?
I thought this company was already controlling ports in other countries that our navy uses. I'm not as concerned as the media wants me to be, until I hear more information.
For the anti-Arab folks, do YOU like to be judged based on what some people that happen to look and talk like you have done? I certainly don't want to be.
The real concerns here are (1) the secrecy in which this deal happened, and (2) the fact that this company which will be guarding our national security is effectively operated by another country's government.
Enough with the outsourcing. Since when can't American's work in securing American ports, or are we just really really to busy fighting another countries democracy battles that we neglect our own. I think the US ought to be about looking after our own, in every way. This port deal is just another example of loosing focus on our own and maybe in this case, inviting others into our country by handing them the gold key.
I dont have a problem with a foreign entity controlling the ports under the laws of the US. They were already controlled by a british firm. What I do have a problem with is that company being controlled or wholey owned by a government or government entity. I have always had a problem with state owned assets coming into the US and buying our assets yet we are not allowed to do the same or compete against those state owned assets in their own home. If Dubai spun the company off where there is transparancy to the financials I would feel a lot more comforatable.
This isnt just Dubai, this is also State owned oil companies (China), state owned Telcos (Germany) and state owned Banks (France) for example being very uncompetative.
