  • No Spending Days

    Hi All,

On your "no spending days", do you include things like your fixed expenses, such as the cost of the shelter, utilities, Cable bundle, etc? Like you wouldn't write a check for those things on a "no spending day"?

Or, a "no spending day", only includes things like purchases of food, clothing, vehicle gas., recreation, ect.?

How do ypu define a "No Spending Day"?

No Spending Day for me,only includes those 'unnecessary' things. Those that belongs to my 'wants' and not my 'needs'

I include my bills, and Only NESSESARY expenses. So I would define a non spending day, as a day where you only spend if necessary on bills, or emergencies.

In my experience, these no spending days are designed to make you more aware of how much money you spend in an average day.

Just make sure you don't buy any wants on this day. If your car breaks down feel free to get it repaired.

Agree with the above. I count a NSD as not purchasing any wants (ex: dining out, shopping, etc). However, I still count paying bills as a NSD (ex: rent, utilities).

This topic comes up from time to time.

I don't have no spend days. Not on purpose anyway. While I see how they may be beneficial to someone that is just starting out or to someone that may have lost their way a bit, I really don't see the benefit in doing it.

But, I would only include wants if you want to do one of these. Some spending is unavoidable.

I agree. If you search, you'll find some other threads on this topic.

But yes, stick with wants. If your gas tank is empty, you need to get gas. If your fridge is empty, you need to buy food. If your bus pass is expired, you need to get to work.

Personally, most days are no-spend days - not by intent, it just works out that way. I go to work, I come home, I go to evening meetings at my synagogue some days. None of that involves spending money. I rarely spend money during the week. Weekends yes, but Monday to Friday not usually.

We don't have any 'no spend' days per se. We just keep up with our budget on a day-to-day basis throughout the month, so there really isn't a need for no spend days since we know where we are and where we are headed so far for the month. Not paying fixed expenses on a 'no spend' day doesn't much make sense as you have to pay your electricity, home, etc. or you will have far worse consequences. I would just focus on food (dining out, but not groceries), clothing, and any other expenses that could be classified as a 'want' instead of a 'need.'

Yes, I agree with all the answers above that a No spending day means not spending on your wants but you certainly can and will have to pay for your needs because that's not something that has cropped up suddenly. They are essential things and are part of your everyday living. But things like shopping, etc would have to be avoided.
