  • How much experience is mandatory??

My friend asked me a question that I was unable to answer. He wants to open a new business dealing with website development. He has 2 years of experience of working in a similar company, he asked me the other day if 2 years was enough for him to open his own company.

What do you think, what should I say? Please reply.

I would say years of experience is not the only factor. Plenty of very experienced people open their own business and fail. Some very experienced people open their own business and succeed.

    What's his plan?
    What's his target market?
    What rates will he charge?
What overhead expenses will he have?
    Will he hire other personnel?
How soon until he makes enough to replace his income?
Does he have any potential clients lined up?
Why should people choose him over a well established firm?
How will he sell his services to others?

There is more to running a business than being good at what you do.

yeah it would be impossible to tell you yes or no. Even if he has 10 years of experience he could still not know enough to sufficiently run a business. On the other hand he could have more than enough time. If he has to ask you to ask on a forum, my guess would be no.

Running a business is all about pleasing customers. I started my business with less than full knowledge and built it over time. If accredidation is involved, he might have a problem.

I've noticed that it does not take a great deal of experience to start a photography business. But, to stay in business takes growing skills and pleasing customers.

Thanks all of you for your replies. Even I think that only with time and experience one can build a business or successfully run it. There is no hard and fast rule for that.
