  • HSA Account & Job Change

My husband has just received a job offer yesterday. It looks like he is going to take it. We don't know particulars on much yet such as insurance premiums and retirement plans. Currently I carry our health insurance (HSA Plan) through my employment. IF everything works out, and we decide to go with his insurance (they do not offer HSA) at the new employer, what happens to our money we have in the bank account set up for the HSA? Can we still use the money in that bank account for copays on a non-HSA insurance plan?

On a side note...I'm very excited for him!! No more micromanaging to deal with. All weekends off. For the first time ever he will have personal days. He will start off with 2 vacation weeks per year (same as he has currently). Now, if I could find a job with same benefits! I'm over working 6 day work weeks

Yes, you can use the HSA money for "qualified HSA medical expenses" under your husbands new insurance plan. My wife and I had a HSA account until she got pregnant and then we switched to a PPO insurance plan (in case we had a complicated pregnancy). We used the money from our 2 yr old HSA account to pay a large portion of the pregnancy related medical bills and copayments.

Below is a link that list all of the 2012 qualified HSA expenses:
