    Re: Progressive auto insurance

I'll never understand the insurance quotes...I bet if I called the same insurance company 10 times the same day I'll get 10 different quotes. We had Allstate forever, including property insurance but I got a tkt and the rates went sky high. The cheapest we found at the time was 21st century, we're stuck with them until the tkt comes off the record. We're paying $2k a yr.

      Jodi,

Have you looked at your credit report? If you're having difficulty lowering your insurance rates it's probably due to something on your credit report. Sorry.

You know, you are right, insurance companies give rates according to credit.... so if you got "bumps" on your credit they'll screw ya!

ohhhh, I hate Progressive. I got hit by another driver, spun 180 degrees into a curb, had to have my rear quarter panel replaced & he had Progressive. They didn't want to replace anything, then didn't want to use new parts, and didn't want to give me a rental, etc... (I did end up getting all that in the end) Sure, great for him, he didn't have to deal with it.... However, a friend's girlfriend who had progressive, backed into his car & Progressive was being a pain in the you know what to both of them...

Guess I will stick with state farm. we were hit from behind from an uninsurance motorist who hit and ran. Even tho I got the tag number, they could not find him. I figured that I would have to pay for the damage, but state farm paid most of it.

              Re: Progressive auto insurance

Thanks for the continued advice. I know it's not our credit, as I check the reports regularly and we both have excellent credit. I think we have found who we are going with - One Beacon. We uesd them in the past and never had any problems, but switched because I got a 10% discount with LM through my job. But now One Beacon is cheaper ($1280 compared to $1343) PLUS I will get almost $100 by paying it all at once, bringing the total to just below $1200 for two cars, which I can live with. Surprisingly, the premiums for my 2000 minivan are higher than DH's 2005 Sentra. I thought it would be the other way around
Just to add this to anyone who makes monthly payments...if at all possible, try to pay it ALL! I noticed a while back that I would be charged $5 a month to pay it in installments. So not only am I saving $60/year, I am also getting nearly $100 off the top. It might be worth asking other companies if they do this. It's a very substantial savings.

When you call progressive (or any other company) you need to tell them you will be paying your premium all at once (every 6 months or 12 months depending on the type of policy) It can save $20+ a month at some companies. I spent a whole day getting rates from differnt companies and then happend to mention that we would be paying upfront...that droped the yearly rate like $180+ for the year!

I guess they just figure you will be paying month to month like most folks unless you tell them!

Also folks with an emergency fund should really consider a $1000 deductable...I can really make a differance in the cost.

                    Re: Progressive auto insurance

UPDATE! I had decided to go with One Beacon, a company we have used in the past because Liberty Mutual would not lower our rates and said that actually, the rates would probably rise.
I just got my LM quote today for the upcoming year and...drum roll please...rates went down about $60 due to a "safe driver" discount that somehow miraculously appeared after my phone call. Funny, I never got this before...maybe they took my threat to switch seriously (which they should have, because I was all ready too...still might, as I can save a little more with another company).
Just wanted to throw that out there in case anyone still is nervous about calling their current company about a deduction...still don't know why they wouldn't inform me of this while I talked with them on the phone though. Their attitude then was, "well, we hope you don't switch, but there's nothing more we can give you."
