  • Women - How much do you spend on hair???

Even during times of economic uncertainty, the beauty salons are full. No wonder my mom wanted me to go to beauty school.

Knowing what salons charge - I've had highlights, perms, cuts, dyes, etc., - it would be interesting to see what we all spend.

So I'll start - Since my hair has gone considerably gray and I'm vain enough to want to look younger, I dye my hair. Used to do it at home by buying Ultress for $2-$4 a box in black. Had to use black 'cause it was the only color that completely covered the gray. When the gray became too much I found a lady in my neighborhood who would cut and dye hair in her home on her days off from the beauty salon. I would buy the Ultress and for $20 she would dye, cut and style my hair. Gorgeous!

Of course, all good things come to an end. She moved to Austrailia and through word of mouth I found a gal with a barely passable salon, but great talent! She has the dye and now I pay $35 for the same job. Still A LOT cheaper than high end salons although now the word has gotten out and I have to make an appointment.

As for shampoo, I get Suave for free. Sale and coupons.

umm like sortof zero? Except for the one time purchase of scrunchies and a 'hair stick' (really it is a three pronged stick, keeps the hair in a bun) That is about it. Oh well shampoo and conditioner, not free, but not to expensive.

DH cuts my hair, but it is long and a straight accross cut is all it needs, I cut the kids hair now too, practice makes perfect!

Now if I had grey hair, I would prolly die it (I admit it I am vain!), but then again, can you imagine the number of boxes to die my hair!!! (it is down to my knees)

For highlights, cut & eyebrows waxed, I spend about $45.00. I have my hair done about every 8 weeks...I absolutely hate doing it, but it's nice to feel like a woman...and to have DH droolin when I come home....lol....

I am scared of the box dyes. I would like to try the highlights but I'm too chicken...

What about tips? How much do you tip? I don't tip....I know it sounds bad...but I've been going to this lady for 16 years...which means I was 10!! LOL...so I don't think she expects a tip...lol...of course back then I didn't worry about highlights...but now, oi! gotta cover the grays....

LOL! Mom always used to say you could tell when the economy was REALLY REALLY bad: beauty salon's weren't full!!...Even during the war, salons were full!!...and the really good ones bought small power generators, because we used to get power outages...

I dye my hair (gray starting to show!!), I buy Nutrisse for $3.00-$6.00 (sometimes I find it on sale!!) and do it myself...I cut my hair 2x a year or so at the beauty parlor (about $12 for shampoo, cut and styling)...other than that: shampoo and conditioner and my "styling cream" or else it looks like a broom!

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

When I was in the Rochester, NY area I went to the same hairplace I've gone since I was a kid and she still shampood & cut my hair for only $10, and she would wax my eyebrows for $5. She did my hair for the Senior Ball in High School for something ridiculously cheap like $20. I think I had my hair highlighted with the cap for something around $25.

Then we moved to Princeton and all the salons are crazy expensive, like $40 and up for a haircut. So I went to Supercuts to get a $13 haircut. I have wavy/curly shoulder length hair and all I ever get is just a trim anyways.

I've used a variety of shampoos -- Pantene ProV, Matrix, Frizz-Ease, Aussie, nothing too expensive. I use the coordinating conditioner and mousse/gel/spray whatever for frizz control.

I'd like to get my hair highlighted again, but I don't want to spend a lot of money, and I too am a little intimidated by the boxes. When I was in college my friends and I would highlight eachother's hair with those kits, and it turned out fine, but I can't do it myself and I'm not going to make my boyfriend do it.

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

When I had long hair, I would get it cut once or twice a year at the vocational school (when I lived in the city) - $4 per haircut. I would usually tip another $4 because I know the kids were all in school and probably not making much. But now I live too far away to reasonably go there, so I have to go to a "real" salon. Usually a Haircrafters or somewhere, I don't have a regular stylist. I think I probably pay about $15 with another few bucks for a tip. Since I chopped my waist-length hair off after ds2, I get a haircut about every 3-4 months. I don't do any coloring, highlights, etc.
My last haircut was at a salon in Long Island when visiting my cousin. They were normally in the $25-50 range, but we bought a package off E-bay for $52 that included a haircut, make-over, and hour massage - best deal I've even had!
As far as hair care, I buy the cheapest shampoo (usually Suave on sale with coupons for $.25-50 per bottle). My hair basically looks the same whatever I use. I have two bottles of styling mousse that I found leftover from high school - both full - that I use sparingly with my latest haircut. Probably won't buy any to replace them when they run out in a few years...I'm pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair.

I don't spend that much on my hair anymore. I got to a local walk-in place to get my hair cut and eyebrows waxed. $25 if hair isn't dried. $30 if they blow your hair out.

All in all not too bad. I can go about 3 months without my hair being cut.

I do color my hair I have the nutriesse

I don't spend anything to speak of, except for hair color. I color my own about every two months. I have not been in a beauty parlor for over 40 years. I am pretty low maintenance. I buy the $1 shampoos and conditioners for both my husband and myself.

I go two to three times a year to get my hair cut. I go to the cheapy places. My hair is longer and I get it undercut. I wear it in a ponytail all the time.

I like the suave humectant shampoo and conditioner and they are my expensive "pamper myself" ones. I use Alberto v05 raspberry normally.

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

I spend $20 for a damp cut with my stylist. (She sprays a water mist on it and cuts it) No wash, dry or style because then its $40. I go about every 3 months.

I don't color my hair right now. I want to get it colored but its nearly $100 to have the stylist do it. It'll have to wait.

I use VO5 shampoo because It's nearly always on sale for .79 or .89. I like the Tea Therapy Clarifying. My teen daughter likes this one too.

My hubby and younger daughter like the Suave green apple.. also never more than .89.

The one product I do spend a lot on is a Volumizer....I have very fine/limp hair. I use a product called BiG Sexy Hair (although I don't have big hair this just helps it to not be so flat). I buy it at Walgreens for $15. Both me and my teen daughter use it but it last us about 2 months.

I use Loreal Hair Spray usually have a coupon and get it for around $2.

I am trying to grow my hair out so that I can pull it back in a ponytail sometimes so I don't have to use so many products on it.

I don't spend much, but it's an area in which I wish I could spend more. I'd love to go get a cut every 8 weeks or so, and maintain highlights year-round. It's one area of living a frugal life that I would change if our disposable income went up. I have long hair, so I can get away with not cutting it very often, so I don't. The last time I had my hair cut and highlighted in a real salon, it cost just about $100. Right now spending that kind of money on my hair even four to five times a year just feels too extravagant. I wish it didn't.

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

I cut my own hair. I pull it up into a ponytail and cut it straight across. This gives a very subtle layered look. Before I started doing that, dh would cut it for me. We learned tricks from hairdresser friends - for instance, you can get an undercut by leaning your head way forward and then cutting the hair straight across, when you straighten up, your hair will be slightly shorter on the bottom.

For highlights. Well, mother nature has blessed me with gray streaks that, when colored with henna, create really neat red streaks. When I henna my hair, everyone asks me where I got my highlights and how much I paid. You'd think they'd have noticed the gray streaks that were there before.

I buy the largest bottle of sauve shampoo they make (as long as it isn't any more expensive per ounce than the smaller bottle) and then water it down a lot to make it "flow" through my hair better.

I've not kept track, but I'd say I spend less than $20/year on henna and shampoo. I know it's less than $20. It may be as much as $15, but I doubt it.

Re: Women - How much do you spend on hair???

Up until about a year ago, I was spending $150 every 3 months for a haircut and colour. This guy was awesome, I loved my hair and I really miss him. However, I have a budget now and I just can't afford it. I don't work outside of the home so it's a bit difficult to justify this cost. Now I colour and cut my hair at home. The box of haircolour is approximately $10. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a little electric razor set so I can do my eyebrows at home too. It cost me $14 so to me, it's well worth the cost. I used to love getting my nails done as well but I now do that myself.
I am a hairdresser but to be honest, I really hate doing my own hair. I no longer work in the trade so I don't really have anyone that I can work a deal to do eachothers hair. I do have a lot of grey so dyeing my hair is not an option. It's a necessity.
As for shampoos and styling products, I do my best to get them free. If I do buy products, I buy the cheapest. I refuse to buy the expensive shampoos and conditioners. My hair is healthy right now and I haven't used the expensive stuff in ages.

I'd say $30 including nice tip about 2 times a year. I should find a cheaper place maybe and do it more often. I could improve, but it's not an area of great expense. No dying, ever, not my thing. Cheap shampoo and conditioner.

I cut my own or have hubby cut it for me, I'm lucky to have naturally curly hair so mistakes can be hidden Hubby doesn't have much hair left so 3-4 times a year he goes for a real short cut but we're going to get a gaurd for our clippers and I'm going to start cutting it for him.

This is a HUGE change from our younger days, we both used to do the whole works, in fact when I met him his ex had been a hair dresser and he had a mullet with a perm in the back (LOL, children of the 80's here!)

I buy Sauve shampoo 1x a year on sale and a few bottles of conditioner and stock up, so maybe 10 dollars a year for us.

No coloring anymore for me, we have hard water and it ends up bleaching out to a yucky blonde, ugh.
