  • Free e-books site?

    All,

I just bought a new IPad and love to be able to maximize its usage since it costs as much as an I-7 laptop. To start, does anyone know good sites to download free e-books? I need to check with the local libraries to see how to get e-books from them as well. Apple store does have free section but everything is listed by author names instead of titles. That would take forever to browse. Does anyone has solution for that as well.

By the way, how many folks here has IPad and which model did you pick and why? I went with the Wifi 32GB model because it is a good compromise in price and performance. There is also an additional 5GB of iCloud storage to back up data such as games and documents. That should be plenty enough as music and movies will be kept on my Netflix and YouTube.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Thanks

Project Gutenberg is my favorite site. They have a huge and constantly growing selection. You should note, however, that it's only for books from 1923 (or around there) and before. They're totally legal and follow copyright rules.

Yes, they have a great selection of the classics. Most of the books on my Kindle are classics that I got for free because copyright rules don't apply.

Congrats on the iPad. We got a 16GB 3G model. What sold me on the 3G was that unlike a phone, you don't need to pay for 3G service unless you want it and you can do it on a month-to-month basis. We've had ours for over a year and only activated 3G for one month last summer when we were traveling. We'll probably do it again next month for the same reason.

You can get free e-books from Kindle and, most likely, from your local library. My wife reads on there all the time and gets her books from the library.

I second what has been said previously - Gutenberg for books that have passed into the public domain, and public library for those that have not.

There may be a long waiting list for ebooks from your library.
