  • Finding a good HVAC person

Is there a place where I can find reliable and honest HVAC service to look at my home HVAC system? I just turned my A/C on today for a first time in 2, probably 3 years and it runs nice and cold. However, I noticed that when I had it on the last time for all summer as well as running heater the last few years, the filters are still nice and clean. That is a bad sign and I need to have the system look at. However, I don't want some rip-off place turnning a working system into something not working to get me to replace it. Of course, around here they love selling people new systems with a "going green" initiative of tax-breaks. I just want a 20-year old system serviced or maintained.

    Thanks.

You're going to find a good HVAC contractor the way you find any other contractor...check on Yelp for contractors with reviews. Also, get their license and look up their license on your state contractor license board to make sure it's valid and current. Lastly, assume they're not even going to show up on time, if at all, since contractors are notorious for being unprofessional. You may have to talk to a few and get several estimates but you'll find a good one if you check their license and go off reviews.

Unfortunately I don't really know a GOOD way for it, but ask some friends/associates if they've got experience with anyone, and also check out Yelp -- depending on the city, that's sometimes a pretty good resource.

In any case, if you get any recommendations, or however you find a particular service, google "[company name] reviews" and you'd probably be surprised at the opinions you'll find.

You know, another thing I just thought of is ask other contractors you use if you have any. If you have a good plumbing or electrical contractor, you should ask them if they know a good HVAC contractor. If you know a general contractor you use for handyman repairs, even better. A lot of the times, contractors will offer remodeling, new construction, etc. and parts of the job they can't handle themselves. The way they get around this is to "sub out" the work to subcontractors, which is basically just hiring another specialized contractor. So even if it's a plumber or an electrician, they may have worked with a pretty good HVAC contractor before. This is why sometimes it may be better to just go through a general contractor...they do the tiresome work of screening subcontractors that they need for a job.

          You could try Angie's List.

A better way to go is to ask friends/family/coworkers who they have used in the past. Check with your purchasing department at work and ask who they use at your building where you work. See if they offer residential service.
